WHAT TO WEAR

What to Wear for Your Family Photoshoot

Choosing outfits for your photoshoot doesn’t need to feel stressful. I’m always happy to offer guidance and help you decide what will photograph beautifully, but the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and like yourself.

Clothes that feel good will help you relax, move naturally, and enjoy the session.

Thinks About Style

Classic and Timeless

This style is simple, soft, and elegant. Think white, cream, beige, pale blue, or neutral-toned outfits.

Lovely options for baby include a plain sleepsuit, a soft romper, a knitted cardigan. With Mum and Dad in matching nuetral tones. This style works beautifully if you want your images to feel classic and timeless.

Casual and Modern

This is a lovely option if you want your photos to feel relaxed but still put together.

Mum might wear a jumpsuit, overalls, jeans with a soft knit, linen or a simple dress. Dad might wear a plain T-shirt,  relaxed shirt, or neutral jumper. Baby could wear a simple sleepsuit, romper, or cosy layered outfit.

Relaxed and Cosy

A relaxed lounge style is a lovely, comfortable option for in-home sessions. Think a matching lounge set for Mum, trousers and a simple T-shirt for Dad and a soft, casual outfit for baby.

This style keeps everyone feeling relaxed and cosy, which helps create natural, comfortable photos at home.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

When choosing outfits for your session, comfort is always the most important thing. Soft colours, simple layers, and natural textures all photograph beautifully and help create a relaxed, timeless feel.

You don’t need to match perfectly — just choose tones that work well together and feel like you.

Colours That Photograph Well

Soft, timeless colours tend to work beautifully in photographs. Blues and whites look especially lovely together, creating a fresh, clean feel. Neutral tones also work extremely well, such as cream, beige, stone, soft grey, oatmeal, taupe, pink and gentle earthy shades. These colours keep the focus on you and your little one, rather than on busy patterns or bold colours.

Avoid hot pink, neon green and bright orange as these can cast unflattering colors onto your skin and baby’s skin.

Co-Oridnate Don't Match

Your outfits do not need to match perfectly. In fact, it usually looks more natural when everyone coordinates rather than wears the exact same thing. Choose colours that sit nicely together. For example, one person might wear cream, another soft blue, another beige, and baby could be in white or oatmeal.

This creates a soft, connected look without feeling too staged.

Comfort Comes First

The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and like yourself. Choose outfits that are easy to move in, soft on the skin, and make you feel relaxed. This is especially important for little ones, as babies and children photograph best when they feel cosy, happy, and unrestricted.

Add Texture and Layers

Textures and layers can make your photos feel warm, soft, and cosy. Knits, waffle fabric, linen, muslin, cardigans, blankets, and soft cotton all photograph beautifully. Layers are also helpful because they can be added or removed during the session to create a little variety without needing a full outfit change.
